Default autonumber and bookmark conflict

I have some text in an appendix of the document. That text is autonumbered and uses a specific defined style (e.g., a, b, c...) When I create a bookmark for that text and then cross-reference that text in another part of the document, then select all cntrl-F9 to update, the text in both locations is treated as linked material and renumbered. I wanted the Appendix items to stay a, b, c - not be renumbered. An example is attached.
