Word XP: Using Autonumbering, how do I put space instead of a tab character
after the number?

This option isn't available for simple numbering, only on the Outline
Numbered tab. Click More and change "Follow number with" from "Tab
character" to "Space."

Thank you for the quick reply! Is there anyway to edit/replace the tab with a
space. Whenever I try it doesn't work.

No, you'll just need to redefine the numbered list to use outline numbering
(Level 1) instead of simple numbering.
