I would like to have this layout:

Number of the example-1cm distance-Example

e.g.


(12)-1cm-Mary eats breakfast


(where "Mary eats breakfast is the example and "-1cm-"
the distance)

How can I get this done?

If you're numbering the paragraphs manually, set a right tab stop to align
the numbers, then a left tab 1 cm to the right of the right tab. Tab once,
type the number, then tab again and type the text.

If you're using autonumbering, you'll need to achieve the same setup through
the Numbering dialog.
