Default How do I change distance between text and seperator

The distance between the text and the seperator seems to vary. How can I
regulate this?
I am using an up to date version of Word

What text ans separator would you be talking about? If between a bullet and
text or a number and text in a list, use Format--Bullets and Numbering, and
hit the Customize button.

If you are referring to footnotes, check the following:

1. Choose InsertReferenceFootnote. In the Footnote and Endnote dialog
box, click Options. On the All Footnotes tab, make sure that "Place at"
is set to "Bottom of page". Click OK, and then click Close.

2. Switch to Normal view. Click ViewFootnotes. In the Footnote pane,
click the Footnote Separator item. Select the separator and make sure
that its font size hasn't been changed (FormatFont), and also that it
hasn't Spacing Before or After applied (FormatParagraph, Indents and
Spacing tab).
