Hi:

In the word 2003, Professional edition: Format/Font/Character
Spacing/Kerning for font...

Sometimes, I find that the checkmark box is filled with the green color, no
checkmark, only this green color filling the box. I can't relate this event
with any special reason.

When any check box in Word is shaded (neither checked nor clear) it
indicates that the formatting of selected text is mixed.
