Why does the page numbering in a TOC not go consecutively?
I have a table of contents that goes to page 81 then starts over...the total
document is 170 pages long. I can see in my document on the bottom left of the screen Page 81 then the next page says Page 14. The numbers are correct like 81/177, but the Page information is wrong. Is this clear as mud? |

Have you restarted numbering at a section break somewhere in the document?

Why does the page numbering in a TOC not go consecutively?
Well, the first thing to note is whether you have any section breaks in the
document. Press Ctrl+End to get to the end of your document. On the status bar, does it say "Section 1" or some higher number? If the latter, then Ctrl+Home to get back to the beginning and View | Header and Footer. Click Show Next on the Header and Footer toolbar to get to the next header; if you have enabled "Different first page" or "Different odd and even," you'll have to click more than once to get to Section 2. When you get to Section 2, click the Format Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar; if a "Start at" number is selected, choose "Continue from previous section" instead. Click OK to return to the header and click Show Next again. Repeat the exercise there. Alternatively, if you find that the document has multiple sections, you can click through them and look at the status bar to see when the pages start renumbering. Click on the button between the browse arrows at the foot of the vertical scroll bar and choose Browse by Section. Then click the down arrows to get to the next section. Look at the status bar and see what the page number is (the one after Page, not the 81/177 one). When you see a number that is not continuous, then that's the section you need to fix. -- Suzanne S.
