Trying to add footnotes to a document converted from Wordperfect. The added
footnote shows up with the number 1 in the middle of the document, not
consecutively numbered with the existing footnotes. Also the number is in
large font instead of the smaller font shown for the other footnotes. Can
new footnotes be added?

The problem is not that you can't add footnotes.

The problem is that Word does not recognize the existing footnotes,
originally created in WordPerfect, as footnotes. This is a problem with the
conversion. You are not the first person to find that footnotes do not come
across correctly from WordPerfect to Word.

Known problem--I can't remember if there is a known solution. Try searching
for similar posts about footnote numbering (use Google Groups), while you
wait to see if anyone remembers more than I do. If you still have access to
the original doc, you might try reconverting it, or using WP to save as Word
format rather than using Word to open a WP doc, or see if saving as RTF in
WP then opening in Word works any better.
