Default Close Button in Word

I use MS Office2k on a Windows2k PC (Networked) at work.
When i try to close MS Word by clicking the cross in the top right-hand
corner the application will not close. (Windows2003 server network i think)

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Office, service packed pc and also ensured i
have all the latest office and windows patches but still the problem persists.

Could this be a corrupt registry key? Any solution most welcome.

Does File/Close work? How about if you start Word in Safe Mode, does the button
work correctly then?
