Default I can't remove a dotted line that appears in my letters

When I type a letter in Word (Office XP) a dotted horizontal line appears
which resists all usual efforts to delete it. If I continue the letter,
another similar line appears 3 or 4 inches further down. Can you help, please?

Hi Geoff:

Try this: Position your cursor where the line appears and then go to Format
| Borders and Shading | Borders and select none. Please let me know if this
works for you. If not, we can try something else.
