Default How to confirm which style set is applied to current document?

Word 2007. I've created several custom style sets and I can apply them to
documents with no problems. When I first apply a style set to a document a
checkmark in the style set drop-down list (HomeStylesChange Styles)
indicates which style is active in the document. No problem.
But when I save and close the document and then reopen it that indicator is
gone. Is there a consistently reliable way to tell which style set is active
for any given document at any time?
