Hi,

basically I am trying to automate a form as much as possible.

I have a master form in a file called master.doc

it's on the work's network so I don't want to use templets yet.


Q1) Is there a way to automatically insert the document name
(filename) into a document but without the extension?

e.g.
I would like results.doc to be inserted as results



Q2) I would like to have the date automatically inserted.

I have put a save date field into the document but...

as I am not using a templet on the network, I have created a master file
and when I need a new document from it I copy and paste it into the
current directory then I change the file name.

It's a form I have created at work.

But the create date field puts the original create date for when the
master doc was made. Which I understand but I would really like it to
have the new date.

But that leads to another problem;

if the document is opened for printing some people may click 'yes' to
the save changes box that appears before it closes down after printing.

I would rather they didn't save any changed as this would change the
save date filed.

Hi Nospam,

1. Unless you use a macro, no. However, if you right-align a filename field at an appropriate position, you could hide the '.doc'
extension behind a borderless autoshape.

2. Your SAVEDATE problem can be cured by changing the master file to a Word template, which you can do by changing the file's
extension to '.dot'. That should be enough to force Word to create a new document based on your master file instead of opening the
file on your server. That'll take care of the date issue.

To change the master document to a template, you should use File SaveAs and
select Template as the type of file to which it should be saved, rather than
just changing the file extension.

Also, it is NEVER TOO EARLY to start using a template.

I now know you can have local dot files.

I will just have to put up with the file name not being inserted without
the extension.
