Default Top of table moves to top of next page

Hello, I am trying to insert into a document a long table that should start
halfway down a page and then break automatically. When I insert the table
under the preceding text, the table shifts automatically to the top of the
next page, leaving half a page of white space, and it refuses to be moved up.
I've tried checking and un checking the Format / Paragraph / Line & Page
Breaks settings, but whatever I check is ignored once I click OK, and it
reverts to greening out all the settings boxes.

Ideas gratefully received x

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFm...ksInTables.htm. Almost
certainly there are some "Keep with next" cells somewhere.

Hi, thanks, that's what I thought, but I trawled through the table and there
weren't any KWN cells. It is confusing because, despite that, when I clicked
the table handle and reviewed the Format/Para/Line Break settings for the
whole table, I found all the settings boxes were greened out, and Word would
not accept my attempts to uncheck them: when I clicked OK and went back to
the panel, the boxes were all greened out again.

The trouble turned out to be nothing to do with the table but a succession
of Keep With Next paragraphs on the proceeding 2 pages of text. Well now I
know!

Ah, so Word took the first opportunity to insert a page break.
