Default Word 2007 - Read-only

New computer came with Word 2007. I am in the trial period. Whenever i open a
doc from Word 2003 it comes up read-only. I have tried switching in
properties and it doesn't work.
Any help would be much appreciated.

It is usually due to an incompatible third party add-in. PaperPort and PDF
Creator are 2 that come to mind.
