Default When placing cursor to insert characters it deletes characters

it begins to delete exisiting text when I place the cursor in the middle of a
paragraph and try to insert a word or two. I think I have made a small
change to the formatting style, any idea as to what I have done?

Press the Insert key once to exit Overtype mode.
