Default cannot delete locked file in Word 2003

The error message is explained online as:
The document is locked for editing by another user

If you see the following message when you try to modify a document in Word
2000 or Word 2002: "The document is locked for editing by another user," Word
previously might have shut down improperly while the file was still open.

Now the document cannot be deleted and Word itself does not want to close.
What to do?

Thanks so much

Crash out of Word. (CTRL+ALT+DEL - then cancel the running application).
Delete the now orphaned temp files.

You should now be able to open it.
