when you used to insert a text box from the drawing toolbar, it used to just
draw a box where you wanted. Now when i insert a textbox it braings up an
annoying canvass border! Is there any way of stopping the canvass border
from appearing?

In Tools Options General, uncheck "Automatically create drawing canvas".
