Default highlighted words do not erase

I´ve managed to change the settings in Word somehow so that highlighted words
don´t erase when I try to type over them. How do I change it back?

On the Tools menu, click Options. Click the Edit tab. Make sure that
the "Typing replaces selection" option is checked, and then click OK.
