Word 2003 - Windows XP Professional.
This was caused by having a specific .doc style sheet password protected (in
a group setting I didn't want this .doc distrubed) attached to the documents.
I removed the .doc protection and my problems went away.

On some documents I had protected with open and modify passwords now that I
have removed them I can not get rid of Password Box for open password. If I
hit enter or OK I go on into the document. How do I get rid of this Password
Box.

Security - Read Only Recommended is not checked.

Save the document as RTF close it and then re-open it in Word. Save as Word
Document.
If that doesn't fix it, open the RTF in WordPad, save it again and then open
it in Word.
