I am writing my PhD thesis in Word 2007 and have manually applied the styles
to the document:
chapter title: heading 1
section title: heading 2
subsection title: heading 3
In order to include chapter number in the caption, I add multilevel list.

The strange thing is, in my laptop (vista, office student 2007), word only
adds the multilevel list to the line where the cursor is in, not the whole
document. But when I copy my thesis file to my Lab PC (XP, office student
2007) and apply the same operation, word correctly associates the outline
numbering to all the headings in the document. For example
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Scope of the work
1.1.1 related work
and so on.

What's the problem with the Word in my laptop? How can I configure it so
that it gives the same behavior as Word in my lab PC?

I can't say for sure, but what happens if you Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Q? (This would be
risky if you have a lot of direct formatting--safe only if you've used
styles consistently.)

Did you expressly associate the levels in the Multilevel list with Headings
1, 2, and 3? Did you name the list? I'm not really up on how this all works
in Word 2007, so I'm really just floundering about here.

All texts are highlighted and paragraph format is changed. For example, I
set the line space 20 pound but now it is 17 pound. But the
chapter/section/subsection style is not changed.

I think I should give more details.

I first wrote my thesis with no styles applied. After I finished, I applied
sytle to titles of chapters, section, subsection. In details, Heading 1 to
chapter title, Heading 2 to section title and Heading 3 to subsection title.
After this I added the table of content (TOC) with no problems.

Then I added captions (figures, equations and tables), the Word complains
that
"There is no chapter number to include in the caption or page number. To
apply chapter numbers use the Multilevel List button on the Home tab and
select a numbering scheme that is linked to the Heading styles."

So I have to add a multilevel list to my document. This is where my problem
begins. When I put the cursor to any of the chapter/section/subsection title
and add a multilevel list, Word only adds the numbering to the current title
and the selected list in the list library is the one I chose. When I move the
curor to another title, the selected list in the list library is none and no
numbering is added to it.

I thought I may not follow the right order let Word automatically link
multilevel list to the styles in my document. Could you please give me
further suggestions?

You need to link the multi-level list to the heading styles. Then all the
headings will be numbered. See

explanation of how this works in Word 2003 and earlier. For Word 2007,
Stefan Blom has provided the following tips:

The general principle remain the same in Word 2007: numbering should be
style-based for stability reasons. But the user interface is quite different
from that of previous versions; for example, you can no longer modify an
outline numbering scheme via the Modify Style dialog box of a paragraph
style.

To edit an existing outline-numbered list: Place the insertion point in the
first top-level paragraph of the document (for example, in the first Heading
1 paragraph if this is heading numbering). On the Home tab, click Multilevel
List | Define New Multilevel List. This displays a dialog box similar to the
Customize Outline Numbered dialog box of previous versions (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html for a
description of the options).

On the other hand, if you want to create a new outline-numbered list in Word
2007, you should set it up using list styles. On the Home tab, click
Multilevel List, and then click Define New List Style. In the Modify Style

properties, click the Format button, and then click Numbering; this displays
the Modify Multilevel List dialog box, where you can change the number
format, indentation, attached paragraph styles to the numbering levels, etc.

The list styles of the active document are displayed under "List Styles" at
Home tab | Multilevel List. You can click a style to apply it to text, but
if you've attached numbering to paragraph styles, you'll find it easier to
apply the appropriate paragraph style directly. To edit a list style,
right-click it and choose Modify from the context menu (this will take you
directly to the Modify Multilevel List dialog box).
