I have word documents (Microsoft Word 2003, SP3) that just recently started
showing all text with the Styles & Formatting = Instructions. How can I make
this text hidden?

For older versions of Word, this problem was caused by the Type: setting
being set to Recover text rather than to Word document in the Open dialog
box. I thought, however, that this problem had been fixed in Word 2003, so
that it would not "remember" that setting. In any case, check File - Open,
and make sure that Files of type: is not set to Recover text.

The type of file is .doc.

The document this is happening on is for meeting minutes. Every other week
I copy the previous document, delete what is necessary and save it to a new
name. This text is showing on every version of this document even though
this text just started appearing in the last week.

I thought this might have something to do with my normal.dot file. I have
reloaded this template, but the text still appears.

Other thoughts?

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm to see if the
example looks like what you're seeing (which is not at all clear). If so,
the problem is that "Files of type" in the Open dialog is set to "Recover
Text from Any File."

If that's not the issue, then you need to give us a better description. What
exactly are you seeing in the document? Field codes such as { PAGE }? Or is
this something external to the document, such as the Style Area, Document
Map, Styles and Formatting task pane, etc. Or is it that the Styles and
Formatting task pane is showing Formatting as well as styles? (Normal +
Bold)
