Default Protection - Limit formatting to a selection of styles

In Word there is a feature to restrict formatting to a selection of styles.
As we are trying to ensure that our users are using Word efficiently and
complying with our brand, we have been considering turning on this feature.
However, this feature also prevents the use of any direct character
formatting. I'm sold on creating and using styles for all paragraph
formatting, but it seems a bit ott to create a style to e.g. apply bold or
italics to charcters.

I think this feature would be far more useable, if you were able to include
character formatting exceptions to allow users to apply bold and italics.

Note that there are two built-in styles that apply italic and bold
formatting, namely, the Emphasis and Strong character styles, respectively.
