Default Wildcard search: text OR text?

Is there a way to do a wildcard search that will search for one string of
characters or another (for example, "abc" or "xyz")?

Not in the way you envisage - see
http://www.gmayor.com/replace_using_wildcards.htm . You can however do so
from a macro.
