Default Table borders disappear after updating TOC

I have a fairly large document with a number of tables. The tables have
visible borders and grid lines.

Everytime I update the Table of Contents and follow it up with a "Save", all
the tables in the document lose their borders. I have tried turning off all
the "Autoformat" options that I could find but this still happens.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem. Thanks!

Does this happen in this particular document or in all documents? Does it
happen if you start Word in safe mode (hold Ctrl as you start the
application)?
