Can I attach a new template to a document in Word that was based on a
different template?

Yes, you can.

Click the €œDocument Template€� icon on the Developer tab to open the
€œTemplates and Add-ins dialog box€�. Click the Attach button next to the
€œDocument template€� field and find the desired template.

If the Developer tab is not shown, select Office button Word Options
Popular tab and turn on €œShow Developer tab in the Ribbon€�.

Note, however, that attaching another template does not automatically change
anything in the document. See this article for details:
