Default Problems with functionality of Open dialog

Help!

We're using Word 2003. My users are struggling with the enhanced
functionality built in to the open dialog. They regularly drag (because of
bad double click?) and have been known to rename and delete files and
folders.

Is there any way of limiting the functionality of the open dialog so that
all it can do is open files?

Not as far as I know. But perhaps something could be done with policies.
Better place to ask about that is one of the "Office" newsgroups. The folks
there are more familiar with policies and the Office SDK than here.
