Default 97 Doc checkboxes opened in 2003

Our environment uses Word 97, 2000, 2003, and 2007. We have a document
created in Word 97 that is used for reserving services. It has several online
checkboxes. When this document is opened in any of other version of Word the
online checkboxes do not work. Does anyone have a solution to this problem
other than recreating the document in another version?
