How can I find out what changes are going to be made and what is trying to
change it. I have eliminated most things that stop it from allowing the
changes to normal such as Outlook using word as email editor, but have yet to
determin which program or document is trying to make the changes in the first
place.
Any suggestions would be greatful.

It's difficult to make suggestions without knowing what you've already tried. No
one likes to take half an hour to think through all the possibilities, write
them out, then be told "I've already tried all that"...

You should also include the version of Word involved when asking questions.

The basic trouble-shooting step I'd use is to try starting Word in Safe Mode to
see if the problem persists. If it goes away, the next two steps a

1. Rename Normal.dot, then start Word. If the problem goes away, there's
something in Normal.dot causing the problem

2. Check what add-ins (both template and COM) are loading. Possibly, one or more
are "talking to" Normal.dot.
