Default displaying styles and direct formatting Word 2007

I see how to show only styles in a document, all styles, etc. what I don't
know is how to toggle between the list showing direct formatting and not. Is
there a way?

Clear the "Keep track of formatting" option in the Advanced category of the
Word Options dialog box (Office button | Word Options).

What should I see, I do not see a difference. The first time I tried it Word
crash this time nothing happened? Is there something else I need to look at
too?

The option I mentioned should display entries such as "Bold" or "Normal + 10
pt" in the Styles pane.

However, if you are referring to showing (hiding) formatted entries in the
Styles pane itself, check (clear) the "Show Preview" option in that pane.

From the styles and formatting pane in W2003 & 2

If you have keep track of formatting ON, you can choose (from the show
dropdown at the bottom of the pane) available formatting (also shows styles),
formatting in use (also shows styles), available styles (no formatting) , and
all styles (no formatting).

If you have keep of formatting OFF, you only have style choices: available
styles, styles in use. (Both options have a "Custom" choice as well.)

I don't have access to W2007 just now, but I think that after you click
Options on the styles pane, in the next dialog you can choose to show
formatting.

Not sure why I didn't notice that your question is about W2007. But there
it is. Sorry.

Now that I am able to check W2007, I see that
--When the "track option" is on, if the style pane option checkboxes for
showing character and font formatting are clear, the formatting will not show
in the styles pane.
--When the track option is off, the boxes are grayed, and the font and
character formatting do not show in the styles pane.

About deleting styles--(This was true in W2003 and may be true in W2007
Word will only allow you to _truly_ delete user-defined styles. "Deleting"
built-in styles just resets their settings to Word's default settings. But
the mandatory styles€” normal, heading 1-9. default paragraph style, table
normal , and no list styles€” cannot be deleted.

About renaming styles--You can rename user-defined styles and built-in styles
except the mandatory styles. The mandatory styles, instead accept your new
"name" as a style alias (style name followed by a comma and your "new" name).

About restricting styles--You can protect a document for styles. Also, you
can choose what styles show up in the styles gallery and in the styles pane.
