Default I CAN NOT HIGHLITE TEXT AND DELETE IT?

If I want to delete anything in word I have to either backspace or delete one
letter or space at a time. How can I fix this?

Tools options edit - check 'typing replaces selection'
and if selected, tools options general uncheck the two Word Perfect
items.
