Word 2003 XP-Index
I need to create and index that captures both the numbered paragraph the
indexed word is in and the page number. I can already create and index with just the page number but is there a way to also capture the numbered paragraph (which will change as the text is edited)? All this should be "auto" updateable if possible. |

Assuming that you are using a numbered style, you can capture its number by
nesting a STYLEREF field within the XE (index entry) field. After you've created the XE field (for example via the Mark Index Entry dialog box) in a numbered paragraph, press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show nonprinting marks including hidden text. You'll see something like this: { XE "my index entry here" }. Place the insertion point after the first quotation mark and press Ctrl+F9 to insert another pair of field delimiters, { }. Type STYLEREF "name of numbered style here" \n. After the STYLEREF field, add a space. In other words, you now have this: { XE "{ STYLEREF "name of numbered style here" \n } my index entry here" } Select the field and press F9 to update it. To show/hide (most) field codes, use Alt+F9. To show/hide hidden text, use Ctrl+Shift+8 (or the ¶ button on the toolbar). You can update the fields in the selection by pressing F9. With STYLEREF fields, switching to Print Preview and back to your current view also works. ~~~ Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Tori" wrote in message ...
