Default Making certain parts of table unmodifiable

Word 2003--XP. Does anyone know how to "lock", or make unmodifiable, a
specific row and/or column in a table? There are certain things I would like
the table users to be able to modify, but not all. What I'm asking about is
sort of similar to the document protection utility, but it's much more
specific and not a document-wide thing. Please advise anyone with thanx!

Insert an Excel Spreadsheet into the document in place of the Word table.
Then you will be able to Protect individual cells in the same way that you
can in Excel. When the document is printed, it will appear no different
from a Word table.

Hope this helps.

Thanx, Doug. Gave you positive feedback.

One more question related to this--what would be the proper method of
inserting the Excel spreadsheet? I've tried several different scenarios but
none achieved the behavior I was hoping to achieve (i.e., Paste Special,
Insert File, etc.). I would like the Word document (calling the Excel
spreadsheet) to be actually linked to the Excel file (so changes made in the
Excel file are reflected in the Word document) and to maintain the cell
protection enabled in Excel. Hope this makes sense and hope to hear back from
you!
