Default Winword 2003 file link syntax with backslashes is changed

In windows word 2003 file link syntax with backslashes is changed into
web-like syntax with slashes.

Scenario:

A new hyperlink is inserted and the document is saved on a group share.
In this example drive H: is mapped to this sha
\\server.net\groupshares\files,After having saved the document, the path
syntax is modified to a relative link. (../../../groupshares/files/test.doc

The link does not work. Clicking it generates this error message
