Default Updating field codes?

I'm working my way thru the study guide for my MOS certification for Word
2003 and something isn't working the way it should.

The guide tells you to use Insert - Date and Time, select a format that
shows time with seconds, and check Update automatically. Note the time, save
the file, close it, reopen - ta dum! The time changed....except mine doesn't
unless I tell it to update the field.

Is there a setting or a step I've missed?

Are you in opening in Print Layout view? "Which fields are updated when you
open, repaginate, or print document" at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211629 definitely claims that opening in
Print Layout view should update TIME and DATE fields. Switching to Print
Layout view should also do it.

Well, duh! I always work in Print Layout view but the files on the study
disk were saved in Normal view. I haven't bothered changing the view because
you do the exercise then close without saving. Seemed like a wasted step.

Thank you (again) for your help.

I figured it was something simple like that. Sounds like the exercise is
poorly designed!
