Default outlining in Word 2007

I had been using word 2007 to create outlines. I am not using the Outline
view, as I want I, A, 1, a type headings.

I had been using this just fine, each new numbering scheme got produced
automatically when I hit enter and tab. Suddenly, this stopped working and
each time I hit enter it generates the next roman numeral for the primary
level and then when I hit tab, it does not convert to the next level. I've
looked at helps for this for 2003 version and I selected the autocorrect
option to set left and first indent with tabs and backspace, but it doesn't
work.

I also defined my own multilevel list, but I can't get the program to
automatically generate those levels, either. What am I missing?
