Default how do I set up format for document already written?

I have already written my dissertation proposal without first setting up a
style template. Is it possible to copy the document into a new template?

What you would do is create a document from the appropriate template, and
then insert your existing document into the newly created one. But note that
you still have to apply styles manually in order to format text.
