Default Table of Contents problem

I am working with Word 2003.

I have auto-numbered heading styles used throughout my document to number
the different sections. The styles are all formatted the same way (Times New
Roman, bold, 14 pt) but the section numbers change based on the heading level
used (1, 1.1, 1.1.1 etc)

I generated a ToC based on heading styles in order to show the section
numbers, the heading text and the page number. The font style is set as
Times New Roman, 12 pt, (no bold). The heading text and the page number are
fine in the ToC but the section numbers are showing up bold. Any idea what
the problem could be?

Thanks.

The most likely explanation is that you defined the number formatting as
Bold in Format | Bullets and Numbering | Outline Numbered | Customize
instead of letting the numbering inherit the formatting of the style (which
is bold, anyway). This may be difficult to undo because you don't want to
apply Regular (which causes the number to be Regular even when the heading
is Bold), but the Font box shows empty boxes for Font, Font style, and Size,
so there's nothing to clear, and even resetting the numbering format doesn't
seem to help. To tell the truth, I'm not sure how to correct this problem
(if in fact this is what is at issue).

It looks like this was the problem. Thank you.
I tried resetting the Outline Numbered gallery choice and although I need to
adjust my tabs now, it's gotten me back to something I can work with.

I really appreciate your help. And I've learned something about the
numbering inheriting the style format.

Glad you got it sorted, and I'm glad resetting the numbering helped. It
didn't seem to work for me.
