Default Header Hijinx--Word 2003

Help! I have combined 4 volumes of testimony into one. I have divided the
document into 4 sections (at the end of each section, Break, Continuous,
Next Page) and have been trying for hours to have a header for section one
(Vol. 1), and Vol. 2, 3 and 4 for each of the 4 sections. I have also
clicked on the little link to sybom shc that it now shows "Link to
Previous) if I put the cursor over it. No matter what I do, the headings
are getting mushed together. Such that the heading for section 3 shows up
in section 2, etc Curiously, after each section break Word is entering
another page. The result is that the new section number (correct or not)
actually shows up on a blank page preceding the actual section (i.e.,
after the section breka but before the start of the actual ext.) How can I
fix this

Sounds like a couple of things are going on with your problem.
Firstly when you break for the sections, why the Continuous?
Between each section there should just be a Next Page break.
Concerning the new page being created, check that your whole document does
not have Different Odd and Even and Different First Page options checked on
the Layout tab under File, Page Setup.
The Link to Previous should not be selected for all sections, then do the
edits required for each section.
For further information see

Hope this helps

Oops. I did not mean to say "continuous," just "next page". Your paper
notes that Microsoft "hid" the footer/header stuff. There is probably some
simple solution to this problem but I seem to be experiencing a Word "block"
of sorts and am getting nowhere. After doggedly persisting in my efforts I
have concluded that this is probably not worth the hour or two I have spent
on it so far. I can probably live without the desired footers or headers.
How about that for a workaround!

Perhaps I ought to migrate to Office 2007. Word 2007 seems to be quite
different from 2003. I hate to say it but I have spent so much time
learning what I have of Word 2003 that I am reluctant to start over.
