ToC's don't update automatically -- you need to put your cursor in the
ToC and press F9. If any headings have changed, it will ask you whether to update the whole table or only the page numbers. What you need is F9 (Update Fields). Ctrl+F9 inserts a field.

Are you saying that your TOC is based on TC (table of contents entry)
fields? If so, yes, you will have to modify the contents of a TC field after you've changed the corresponding heading. Then you can place the insertion point inside the TOC field and press F9 to update it. To work with TC fields, show hidden text in your document. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "annoni" wrote in message ... Thank you for your answer. To confirm, I guess there is no automatic way to
update tc field contents to correspond to changes?...each code field has to be manually updated? "Stefan Blom" wrote: Are you saying that your TOC is based on TC (table of contents entry) fields? Well, there are some things you can do. For example, you can nest a
cross-reference or a STYLEREF field within a TC field but, of course, this requires extra work when you first set it up. If you can base your TOC on paragraph styles instead, that will be easier. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "annoni" wrote in message ... Thank you for your answer.
