Default How do I change the alignment of the 1st sentence in a paragraph?

I would like to have the 1st sentence in the paragraph with left alignment
and the remaining part to be justified. When I try to do this, the entire
paragraph either becomes left or justified. Any help will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

If you're saying that you want the first line of the paragraph to be
shorter than the rest of the paragraph, with the rest of the paragraph
making a rectangular block, then set the paragraph to Justified and
use a manual line space (Shift-Enter) where you want the first line to
end.

You'll have to insert a line break (Shift+Enter) after the first sentence
and do one of two things to keep that line from being justified:

1. Insert a tab character before the line break.

2. In the Compatibility Options (Tools | Options | Compatibility), check the
one for "Don't expand character spaces [i.e., justify] on the line ending
Shift-Return."

Have you actually tried this? I think you'll find that the short line will
be expanded. Note the workarounds provided in my post.

Well, if you had posted before me, I wouldn't have posted!

I have a feeling she didn't actually say what she really wants, since
what she did ask for seems an unlikely request.

It sounded to me like an awkward sort of run-in sidehead--not really run in.
But unless she comes back, I guess we won't know.

Default How do I change the alignment of the 1st sentence in a paragraph?

I just discovered that after my last Update, I had to re-select most
of my Word Options (such as no "smart cursoring," "smart paragraph
selection," or "selecting automatically selects entire word), and
noticed the Layout Option "Don't expand character spaces on line that
ends with SHIFT+RETURN." I must have always had that checked, so the
short line wouldn't expand.

Yes, that would explain it. Ordinarily you do want the line to expand (and
you can always prevent it by preceding the line break with a tab character).
