Default Numbering tab

My WORD 2003 and 2007 have lost the use of the tab key to move down levels in
numbering. The problem is machine specific and I have no idea of where to
look. I have reinstalled Word 2007 but to avail

In Word 2003: Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type: Set
left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.

In Word 2007: Office Button | Word Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options
| AutoFormat As You Type: Set left- and first-indent with tabs and
backspaces.
