Simply want to be able to recover document files when computer restarts after
an update. In this case, the recovery pane doesn't show up so I am asking
how to get the recovery pane activated to find those documents and save them.

The recovery feature is intended to recover documents after Word has
crashed, not after a normal shutdown of Word and Windows, so you have lost
your unsaved documents.

What you can do to back up documents is described at
