I have been working on an index and have done a pretty good job! I have read
the article that Suzanne suggested, and it was very easy to follow. I know that "My Home", " My Home", and "my Home" will create 3 separate Level 1 entries because they are not typed the same. My index has a Level 1 entry called "Beverages". I have typed it out as "Beverages" exactly the same, and I now have 14 separate Level 1 beverage entries. If I type it out as " Beveages" (please note the space between the " and the b), the remaining 7 entries done this way are all under the Level 1 heading of Beverages and the way I want it. I can fake it and add a space between the " and the b for the remaining 14 entries, but I don't feel this is correct, and I would prefer to do it correctly. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? :-( TIA, |

Could you list the exact XE and INDEX field code? What happens if you copy one of the XE fields to a different page (additional page number only, as it should be, or additional entry)? Is the formatting of the XE fields the same (especially: language)? Are there unresolved TrackChancges in the document? 0.2¢ Robert -- /"\ ASCII Ribbon Campaign | MSFT | \ / | MVP | Scientific Reports X Against HTML | for | with Word? / \ in e-mail & news | Word | http://www.masteringword.eu/ |

FWIW, I had this problem in a document I worked on quite a long time ago in
an earlier version of Word. It was a family history/genealogy and naturally contained quite a lot of family names, all indexed. The overall family name was Link, and I don't know whether it was just a coincidence, or whether the word "Link" confused Word, but I kept getting separate entries for a lot of the Link names. I never could resolve the problem (like Chris, I had confirmed in every way possible that all the XE fields were identical) and ended up editing the index by hand when text editing was complete (this was preferable anyway because I wanted to do some fine-tuning). I later concluded that probably the document had been corrupt and might have succumbed to the treatments recommended at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm, but it had numerous sections, pictures, tables, etc., and was very complex, so I was loath to try to "launder" it. -- Suzanne S.
