Thanks for the help, this is the reaction I'm looking for whenever I open any
Word file. How can I change my settings/preferences so that Word is the
default program instead of Wordpad?

Although reregistering Word (as Charles suggests) is the easy way to
accomplish it. Instead of selecting Microsoft Word from the Open With list,
choose Select Application, then select Word and check the box for "Always
use this application to open this file type."
