When I highlight a word that I want to change with another word or delete by
hitting the backspace button, it no longer works. I used to be able to do
this and now all of a sudden it won't work. And because it used to I am
constantly trying to type that way and get frustrated when it doesn't work. I
don't know where to change the setting for this. Please help!

Go to Tools Options Edit (or if you have Word 2007, go to Office button
Word Options Advanced) and check the box for "Typing replaces
selection".
