Default Random rules

For some reason my Word 2000 has decided to put rules in
every once in a while. When I try to erase them (by putting the
cursor to the last word of the line above and deleiting, they just
move down to the end of the next paragraph. I have a 23 page paper
with about 7 unbidden rules messing up the layout. Any suggestions
for something I did wrong on formatting or other ways to get rid of
them?

Thanks. That worked, although not every time and not right away
and I am still not exactly sure what I did that was successful.
However, having used Word for the last 10 years or so, I am quite
comfortable flailing around until it decides to do what I asked it
to do originally (g).
BTW: The control over formatting was especially good. Thanks again.
