Default When I hit enter, a bullet doesn't appear on the next line....

I have a custom List style applied to my list of data. If I put the cursor at the end of any line I see the numbering list button is highlighted indicating that Word 2010 recognizes a list is in place.

Then when I hit enter to get the next number on the next line, a number does not appear. It's as if all of a sudden, Word doesn't recognize a list style anymore.

How can I make the next number appear again? What are likely causes of this problem?

Default Inconsistencies with Indents on Custom List Styles

Hi,

The problem I am having deals with understanding
how Word recognizes the "Aligned at:" and "Text
Indent at:" fields when they are applied to different
outline levels (Level 1, Level 2, etc.).

"Aligned at" means the position of the number. "Text indent at" is the
hanging indent of the paragraph.

I created a New List Style yesterday called "YouTube Video Outline".

You created a list style as described he
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html ?

The problem is that I am seeing different settings for
the same level which seems to depend on which
level I start at.

You defined numbering for all the levels within the same list style?

It seems like you are quoting from my other post. For this post, when I hit enter, a bullet doesn't appear on the next line. Not sure why?

yes. That is the only post I can see from you, and that is the post I
answered to.

Please differ: Bullets are not applied to *lines*, they are applied
just to *paragraphs*.
Are you using styles? What style are you using for the bulleted
paragraph? In that style: What is defined as "Style for following
paragraph"?

Which version of Word are you using?

Lisa,

For what it's worth, I've seen this in other threads too: some posts simply
don't turn up in my newsreader. I'm accessing the groups via
news.eternal-september.org. You too?

I am accessing the groups via news.individual.de. And I am using
Windows Live Mail (don't scold me) as Newsreader.
So it seems not to be a problem of my newsserver, and not a problem of
WLM :-).
Like you, I also missed some posts in the past.

you applied "Heading 1", "Heading 2", "Heading 3" to your paragraphs.
In each of these styles you will find (when modifying the styles):
"Style for following paragraph: Normal".
So, whenever you create a new paragraph at the end of "Heading #"
paragraphs, the new paragraph will get Normal style. And Normal style
does not include numbering.

Default Inconsistencies with Indents on Custom List Styles

Hi,

"mleach" schrieb

[Word 2010]
In your sample document you numbered Headings by using just a
multilevel list - not a list style.
After that you applied your list style ("YouTube Video Outline") to the
Headings.
After removing the list style from the document, and pressing Ctrl + Q,
the Headings will get back their own numbering, which seems to be
similar to your list style.

So far, so bad :-(.
Please, follow the instructions, how to link paragraph styles to list
styles (e. g.
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...20072010.html).
Or use just the list style, to number paragraphs. But don't mix it,
like you did. And for a complex document never use multilevel lists -
use list styles instead.

For your information:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bull...s20072010.html
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Number...eNumbering.htm
http://blogs.office.com/b/microsoft-...-of-lists.aspx
http://blogs.office.com/b/microsoft-...st-styles.aspx
http://blogs.office.com/b/microsoft-...s-designs.aspx

The problem I am having deals with understanding how
Word recognizes the "Aligned at:" and "Text Indent at:"
fields when they are applied to different outline levels
(Level 1, Level 2, etc.).

I think, it's clear now, isn't it?

The problem is that I am seeing different settings
for the same level which seems to depend on which
level I start at.

After choosing "List style | modify", the next step is "Format |
Numbering...". In the first dialog box you must not choose anything
different from "Format". Do not choose any other entry in the list
"Apply formatting to" - leave there the entry "Level 1".
Otherwise you will change the indents.
