I'm on 2003 btw.

Ok, FINALLY fixed it.

For others...

There's symbol that turns all the code on & off a word doc. It should be in the standard toolbar, but wasn't, so I had to go into custom toolbar & find it & put it there.

You just click on it & it removes all those characters.

You can also show or hide formatting marks by clicking Options on the Tools menu and then clicking the View tab. Under Formatting marks, select or clear the check boxes.

I don't see any character; you have a blank page ready to use.

Press Ctrl-Shift-8 and the incredibly useful paragraph marks will go
away, though I don't know how one can manage in Word without them --
don't you ever find mysterious blank lines in your documents?

This is not a TOC issue (at least not from anything I can see in your screen
shot). As Peter says, you just have nonprinting characters displayed; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm.
