I don't know how the experts do this, but I was able to do it by:
1) Generating a Acrobat pdf file from the Word document and then
2) Saving the pdf file as a jpeg or tif

But to do this, I think you would need a full version of Acrobat.

There is no function within Word to do this, and your approach will
certainly require the expensive addition of Acrobat. The alternative is to
use software with a driver that 'prints' scrolling screen output to a
graphics file. One that works particularly well is SnagIt from
www.techsmith.com , but there are others.

Thanks. I tried SnagIt and it not only makes for a crisper tif image, but
also much smaller - 90 KB versus 17,108 KB!!!

Needless to say, I will be purchasing SnagIt and redoing my tifs.

SnagIt is brilliant and will simply do many of your graphics related tasks
that Photoshop makes a meal of. I use it to illustrate my web site, and its
batch mode to shrink images from my digital camera for publication. It will
also convert between a huge variety of graphics formats. Well worth the
money

I agree. Allow me to put in another plug for SnagIt. I don't use more than a
tiny fraction of its features, I'm sure, but I have so found it can handle
just about anything I need it to do.
