Default Why is autocorrect erasing a word in a text field?

In Word 2000, I have a document that has text fields in it. When I am typing
a sentence in and accidently type hte instead of the, instead of AutoCorrect
fixing the problem, it just erases the word entirely. Strangely enough, if i
only type one single word and it needs fixed, it works, but when I type in a
sentence and the 2nd word or later needs fixed, that is when it erases.
