Default Odd formatting behavior

I created a table in which I need to have column 1 in a certain font and
size, then each line of column 2 in a different font format. When I change
the attribute for a single line, the entire document converts to that
attribute (font size, italic, whatever). If I then to Ctrl Z, it all goes
away except for my selected line. I have seen this behavior outside of tables
in the past, as well - renumbering, I believe. Word will apply the last
command universally and then get it right with a Ctrl Z (which ought to undo
the whole command, but doesn't). Since I eventually got what I wanted, I
never pursured it. Anybody know what is up with that?
